So apparently, I may be breaking the rules by cooking this kind of seyami food.
Right, so: the point of the Seyam is to eat to live and reverse our backward thinking that we live to eat. There is supposed to be a certain amount of pain and suffering involved, a certain amount of asceticism and relinquishment involved.
For me, enduring veganism for 55 days is all of that, and it doesn't matter how good it is, it's hard for me, because there's more than just veganism involved. It's hard for me to break my serious, hard-core habit of going out all the time. It's hard for me to have to forego all of the things I'm used to. I kind of see cooking well and creatively as a respite, a way of getting through the seyam successfully, seeing as I've seen people just give up because it's very hard.
Advise, please. If anyone is out there reading. I have a couple of meals that I took pictures of, and Ihad intentions of at least posting the recipes, but I need to know that what I'm doing isn't derailing anyone, or actually making the seyam harder. If so, I'll stop right here.
thanks, all.

I try and avoid meat substitutes on Fridays. One of the points of Lent is to try and mortify the flesh's desires, so avoiding the suffering by finding a substitute that still satisfies that desire subtracts from that, and takes away from the suffering that we can offer up as well.
ReplyDeleteThen again, as I've been learning all-too-well this Lent, we _must_ be totally dependent on Christ in all we do — if we practice all the mortification, rigor and penance of the Desert Fathers, but do it with a prideful spirit, it's worth less than nothing in that it takes us away from Christ. If you're pushing yourself so hard that you give up, it's a good sign that you're doing it on your own power, and not depending on Christ. (The beginning of The Spiritual Combat by Dom Lorenzo Scupoli (coincidentally my Lenten reading) is great at discussing that. It's free on Google Books as well.)
God always gives us "enough happiness to get by" as Venerable Pope John Paul II told us, so if the cooking well acts as a respite that gets you through it, then it's not a horrible thing.
Over all, if your conscience is tingling, I'd ask Jesus tomorrow at communion what he wants you to do. There is never a time when you're closer to him this side of Heaven.
Dear Madame Maladicta,
ReplyDeletefist of all, let me start by telling you how much i appreciate that you are trying to share wiht us your ideas and creations for Seyami food.
Regarding to your comment written in February,2010 that mentioned other people's opinion about what your blog and arguing that it might be against the spiritual purpose to fast in the first place.
Let me just tell you that the reason i saw your blog was because i was searching myself for new recipes to do during our fasting now, after checking the date of your last comment, i didn't know whether my comment would make such a difference but decided to write anyway just to tell that yes, i do agree that fasting has a bigger meaning than minimizing the types of food we eat or trying to come up with different ways to cook food to keep us from getting bored from almost the same food every day. Its a spiritual state that the heart, body and soul must reach during fasting so regardless of the type of food we are eating for 45 or 55 days, the only thing we should always think is to thank GOD for his blessing as some other people can't even find enough food to eat and survive.
Don't get me wrong i am only sharing with you how i see fasting should be but at the same time Jesus Christ is a merciful GOD and if other people can't stay for a long time without meat so as a result they don't fast all the days , then in this case i see what you are doing as something great as you are helping those who can't fast to actually be able to fast which is amazing..
I simply support what you are doing for also one main reason, Fasting requires a strong will and strong faith. All human beings differ in their strength, so i don't think there is a problem of slowly taking people's hand so as to grow in their faith and consequently in their will, so maybe they will enjoy the varieties of Seyami food for their fasting, maybe when they fast the next time they wont need that much, and the fasting after that they will be satisfied with just a small amount of food and whatever is there.. then suddenly they'll reach the point where they don't care anymore what they are eating, a simple meal would be enough and by that we helped them reach the spiritual purpose of fasting i mentioned at the beginning.
I apologize for making it so long for you to read and also one last thing, people disputing this blog whether it goes along with the purpose of fasting or not, People choose how they want their fasting period to be.. people that find its difficult to fast all the time can always check your blog for something that helps them during their fasting and people used to fasting and don't need varieties in food and prefer it to be more spiritual and not about the food at all, this blog won't hurt him in anything..
Thank you for your help in advance and happy that you found your way to our lord Jesus Christ..
Good Luck..
